UL vs CE Fire Door Hardware: Standards, Testing and Application Differences

A three hour UL claim and a European fire test result are not two labels for the same approval. They come from different standards frameworks and can describe different tested assemblies, hardware configurations and intended uses. For an international commercial project, start with the standard required by the door schedule and approval authority. Then check the hardware model and the evidence for that exact opening. D&D manufactures fire door hardware for both UL and European specification routes, but we review each route separately.

What UL and CE mean in a specification

UL certification is a third party product certification route used in North American and other UL-specified projects. The UL record identifies the product category, covered models, applicable standards, markings and limitations. CE marking is a manufacturer’s declaration under the applicable European regulatory framework; for construction products it is tied to a relevant harmonised technical specification or applicable assessment route and the required declaration and supporting technical documentation. Not every EN test result by itself grants a right to apply a CE mark.

These systems should be described accurately in a submittal. “UL listed” needs a current certification record for the precise model. “CE marked” needs the applicable regulatory basis, declaration and declared performance. A test report can be relevant evidence, but it should not be presented as a substitute for either record.

Fire testing is not directly interchangeable

UL 10C is the Standard for Positive Pressure Fire Tests of Door Assemblies. EN 1634-1 is a European fire resistance test method for door and shutter assemblies and openable windows. They use distinct procedures and acceptance frameworks. Similar stated durations do not establish identical classifications or make a hardware item interchangeable between systems. Check the door construction, hardware fitted to the tested assembly, test evidence, field of application and installation instructions before describing a product as suitable for a particular fire door.

Exit hardware adds a separate function. UL 305 concerns panic hardware; UL Solutions identifies fire exit hardware for rated doors as investigated under both UL 305 and UL 10C. European projects may specify EN 1125 for panic exit devices operated by a horizontal bar, with additional fire door suitability evidence where required. Neither an ordinary UL 305 panic listing nor an EN 1125 performance result alone answers every question about a rated opening.

Which product standards belong in the comparison

Under European specifications, the product standard depends on the item: EN 1935 for single-axis hinges, EN 12209 for mechanically operated locks and striking plates, EN 1154 for controlled door closing devices, EN 1906 for lever handles and knobs, EN 1303 for cylinders and EN 1125 for horizontal-bar panic exit devices. EN 1670 addresses corrosion resistance of building hardware. These standards do not all make the same claim; durability, corrosion and fire suitability should be identified separately.

For UL projects, use the relevant UL product category and applicable standard rather than a single generic “UL hardware” description. ANSI/BHMA grades can document mechanical performance in addition to a fire-related UL certification. For example, our hinges have ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 and Grade 2 options; that grade does not replace the UL fire listing.

For either route, compare the exact model, size, function, mounting and door preparation with the evidence. If the consultant proposes a substitute, review the replacement’s documents rather than transferring a rating from the original product. Local regulations and the authority having jurisdiction determine what the project will accept.

How we document D&D hardware

Our UL range includes door hinges under file R38013 (UL/cUL UL 10C, up to three hours; Grade 1 or Grade 2 as applicable), concealed hinges under R38013, mortise locks under R40901, door closers under R40717 and fire exit hardware under R40486. The stated UL 10C fire rating for the latter three categories is up to three hours for applicable models. Our UL 305 panic hardware reference is SA45817. Fire exit devices also require confirmation of the applicable UL 305 coverage for the selected model. These file references are starting points; the current record must be checked for the exact item.

Our European range includes hinges, locks, closers and exit hardware evaluated against the relevant EN product standards, with fire and corrosion evidence according to the model. We can provide model-specific documents for the proposed hardware set. We do not treat one product’s EN 1634 test duration as a claim for every item in the range, or its UL file number as proof that every model in the catalog is covered.

A useful specification decision

If the schedule calls for a UL listed assembly, request the UL certification record and match the hardware to the rated opening. If it calls for a European standards route, request the relevant declaration where applicable, product classification, fire evidence and installation details. Where both systems appear in one project, divide the review by opening. Tell us the door schedule, required rating, market and intended hardware functions so we can identify the correct D&D models and supporting records.

Frequently asked questions

Is CE marking the same as UL Listing?

No. CE marking follows an applicable European regulatory and declaration route. UL Listing is a product certification under the relevant UL category. The documents and legal role differ.

Can I convert a UL three hour rating into an EN classification?

No. The test method, assembly and classification evidence must be reviewed separately. Equal durations do not create automatic equivalence.

Does EN 1634 make a hinge CE marked?

No. EN 1634 fire test evidence alone is not a complete CE marking route. Check the applicable product specification, declaration requirements and supported intended use.

Can UL 305 panic hardware be used on a fire door?

Confirm that the particular device is certified as fire exit hardware under the applicable UL 10C and UL 305 requirements; a panic listing alone is insufficient.

What should I send D&D for a dual-standard project?

Send the opening schedule, target market, door and frame details, rating, swing, hardware functions and specified standards. We can map each opening to a model and its available evidence.
