UL 305 is the Standard for Panic Hardware. It addresses releasing devices used on outward-opening doors so occupants can move toward an exit and unlatch the door through action on a push pad, crossbar or other actuating element. The standard asks whether the device will release dependably when an emergency places unusual demand on the door and its hardware.
That purpose is narrower than many product descriptions suggest. A UL 305 listing does not, by itself, establish a fire-resistance rating for the door opening. It also does not replace the building code, accessibility rules, the approved door schedule or the installation instructions. It confirms that the listed panic hardware has been evaluated for the safety functions covered by UL 305, within the conditions of its certification.

UL Solutions describes four critical test areas in UL 305: endurance, emergency operation, elevated ambient exposure and low-temperature impact. Together, they examine more than whether a sample works once in a laboratory. They challenge the operating mechanism, latching strength and ability to release after repeated use or adverse exposure.
Endurance testing repeatedly cycles the hardware to reveal wear, loosening, deformation or loss of function. A passing result applies to the tested construction—not to unlisted substitute parts, trims or latch arrangements.
Emergency-operation testing checks whether the releasing mechanism can unlatch under prescribed loading. It addresses the central life-safety question: when force is applied in the direction of egress, will the door release as intended?
This test exposes the device to elevated ambient conditions and then evaluates its operation. The objective is not to assign a fire rating to ordinary panic hardware. It is to confirm that the releasing device continues to satisfy the UL 305 performance criteria after the specified exposure.
Low temperatures can affect clearances, lubricants, polymers and the behavior of moving components. The impact evaluation examines whether the device retains the strength and functionality required by the standard under the prescribed low-temperature condition. For buyers, it is another reason to evaluate the exact listed construction rather than a visually similar product.
UL’s application guidance notes that UL 305 covers releasing devices operated by an actuating bar, crossbar, push pad or actuating paddle on outward-opening doors. For bar-type devices, the actuating portion must extend across at least one-half of the door-leaf width. Current code requirements must also be checked for the project; UL’s code guidance cites a maximum unlatching force of 15 lbf (67 N) in the referenced egress provisions.
These points matter during submittal review. Door width, stile dimensions, handing, latch type and trim arrangement should be confirmed before ordering.

The terminology should therefore follow the opening. If the door is not fire rated but requires panic egress, listed panic hardware may be appropriate. If the opening is fire rated, specify listed fire exit hardware in the correct rating and configuration. Calling every push-bar device a “panic bar” hides a compliance difference that can lead to rejected submittals or field replacement.

A catalog claim is not the end of verification. UL guidance indicates that certified panic hardware carries the UL mark and category identification. The product, certification record and technical submittal should point to the same model and configuration.
Before approval, the project team should check:
· manufacturer, model, file number and listing category;
· device type, door width, handing, latch and trim;
· permitted strikes, mullions, accessories and fasteners;
· current certification and installation instructions; and
· the specification, adopted code and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements.
UL 305 addresses panic hardware performance; it is not a three-hour fire test. A rated opening needs fire exit hardware that carries the appropriate fire-door certification and is permitted in the complete assembly.
Listings can be model- and configuration-specific. Rim, mortise, surface vertical rod and concealed vertical rod devices are not automatically interchangeable. The listed trim, strike and accessories also matter.
Incorrect reinforcement, fasteners, clearances or strike positioning can undermine operation even when the correct device was ordered. Coordination should take place before the door and frame are released for production.
Dogging holds the latch retracted and may leave a fire door unable to latch. UL’s application guide notes that model codes prohibit mechanical latch retraction or dogging on fire exit hardware. Any permitted electrical retraction arrangement must be specifically listed, coordinated and connected as required by the applicable code and fire-alarm design.

2. Confirm why panic or fire exit hardware is required under the adopted code and occupancy conditions.
3. Select the exact UL-listed category and model configuration.
4. Match the device to the door material, width, stile, handing and latch arrangement.
5. Check trim, cylinder, strike, mullion and accessory compatibility.
6. Compare markings and file information with the current certification record.
7. Coordinate door and frame preparation before manufacturing.
8. Install and inspect the opening in accordance with the listing, instructions and AHJ requirements.

For a non-rated egress door, the UL 305 panic-hardware listing is the central product evidence. For a rated opening, the fire exit hardware listing, rating and compatibility with the complete door assembly must be reviewed together.
