Panic bars (also known as cross bars, exit devices or push bars) are spring-loaded metal bars fitted inside outward-opening exit doors. When pressed, it instantly releases the locking mechanism, enabling rapid evacuation without the need to turn handles or use keys. This device is designed to safeguard lives: during emergencies, individuals need only apply force to push the door; the pressure exerted on the bar releases the lock, allowing the door to open. This mechanism ensures the door can be opened even when people are pressed against it. For further information, please contact us.

 Rim Exit Device

A panic bar (also called a crash bar, exit device, or push bar) is a spring-loaded metal bar installed horizontally on the inside of an outward-opening exit door. When pressed, it instantly releases the latch, allowing occupants to exit quickly without twisting a knob or using a key. It is designed for life-safety: in a panic situation a crowd can simply push against the door and the pressure on the bar unlatches it, so the door swings open even if people are pressed against it .
Because the device is governed by strict codes, the choice of whether to use one must be made from several angles:
  1. Code & occupancy requirements
    • International Building Code (IBC) and NFPA 101 require panic hardware on most doors serving Assembly (A), Educational (E), High-Hazard (H) and certain Institutional occupancies once the calculated occupant load reaches 50 or more people
      .
    • Local fire marshals or building departments may lower that threshold or extend the rule to other occupancy types; always verify the exact ordinance for your jurisdiction.
  2. Door location and function
    • Any door that is designated as a “means of egress” leading to the exterior, a stairwell, or a horizontal exit is normally a candidate.
    • If the door is a fire-rated barrier (e.g., stairwell or shaft enclosure) you must use a fire-rated panic device that bears the proper UL or BS EN label and keeps the door latched during a fire; non-rated devices are acceptable on ordinary exit doors
      .
  3. Accessibility & usability
    • ADA, ICC A117.1 and most regional accessibility standards limit the unlatching force to 15 lb (≈67 N) and require the operable portion to be mounted 34-48 in (860-1220 mm) above the floor so children, wheelchair users, and people with limited dexterity can activate it with a simple push
      .
  4. Security vs. life-safety balance
    • Panic bars allow free egress from the inside while the outside can remain locked, deterring unauthorized entry.
    • You can add alarms, delayed-egress hardware, or electrified latch-retraction that ties into access-control, but each option must still release within 15 s (or the code-specified time) when power fails or the bar is pushed
      .
  5. Traffic volume & abuse level
    • High-frequency or industrial openings call for heavy-duty “crash” or “cross-bar” models made of stainless steel; lighter-duty push-pad styles suffice for small offices or retail back doors
      .
  1. Door construction & aesthetics
    • Rim-style devices are easiest to retrofit on wood or hollow-metal doors; mortise or vertical-rod models give a cleaner look and higher security but require pocket prep or floor strikes.
    • Narrow stile aluminum or all-glass doors need manufacturer-specific kits.
  2. Environmental & electrical considerations
    • Exterior doors exposed to weather must carry a weather-resistance rating.
    • If you need electric dogging, remote release, or integration with fire-alarm relays, select an electrified panic bar that lists compatibility with your power-supply and control system
      .
  3. Cost & maintenance
    • Fire-listed and electrified units cost more and must be inspected at intervals mandated by NFPA 80/101 (usually annually). Factor in parts availability and who will service the hardware over its life cycle.
In short, install a panic bar whenever life-safety codes or crowd-density calculations say you must, and strongly consider one on any door where fast, fool-proof egress outweighs the need for ordinary keyed hardware. Evaluate the occupancy type, door rating, accessibility rules, security goals, traffic/abuse level, door material, and long-term upkeep before choosing the specific model and features.
