A UL file number helps you find a certification record; it does not certify every model in a supplier’s catalog. To verify UL listed door hardware, match the exact model to the current UL record, its product category, applicable standard, rating and installation conditions. This check matters most when a hardware set is being submitted for a fire rated commercial door.
Record the model designation from the hardware schedule, product label and manufacturer’s drawing. Include relevant variants such as size, function, finish and handing where the certification differentiates them. Ask for the UL file number and the applicable standard for that specific configuration. A brochure image or a statement that a product is “UL approved” is insufficient for model level verification.
Open UL Solutions’ Product iQ and search by file number or model. Product iQ also supports company names and category descriptions, including Category Control Numbers (CCNs). Review the company and product category shown in the result, then read the certification details for the model or series being proposed. A single file may include more than one model; a valid file number alone does not establish that a particular substitute is covered.
Compare the certification record with the submitted product marking, drawings and installation instructions. Confirm the stated fire rating and any restrictions on size, mounting or use. If the model or condition cannot be reconciled, request the applicable listing detail from the manufacturer before approving the submittal.
UL 10C is the standard for positive pressure fire tests of door assemblies. The presence of “UL 10C” in marketing copy does not automatically give every hardware model a three hour rating. Read the relevant certification and its conditions for the actual opening. UL 305 is the standard for panic hardware and concerns the exit device’s egress function. UL’s door and hardware guidance says fire exit hardware must meet both UL 305 and UL 10C. A UL 305 panic device should therefore not be assumed suitable for a fire rated opening without confirming its fire exit hardware certification.

These references identify certification files, not a blanket approval of every D&D item. For a concealed hinge, for example, confirm its particular model under R38013 rather than applying the certification of another hinge with a similar appearance. Check Grade 1 or Grade 2 performance claims separately against the applicable ANSI/BHMA documentation; cycle grade and fire certification answer different questions.
When records are difficult to interpret, keep the question narrow: does the listing cover this exact item on this type of opening? An opening may involve a labeled door and frame, a latch, hinges, a closer and an exit device. Certification for one component cannot establish compliance of the complete assembly. The specified door rating, hardware preparation and installation instructions must also align. Where a project requires a particular regional mark, such as cUL, confirm that geographic scope in the certification and marking rather than inferring it from a general UL reference.
For each opening, provide the exact model, product category, UL file number, applicable standard, certified rating where relevant, and a drawing or data sheet that identifies the supplied configuration. Add the manufacturer’s installation instructions and photographs of the required product marking when requested. For an exit door, distinguish panic hardware from fire exit hardware on the schedule. This makes the certification trail reviewable by the door manufacturer, consultant and authority having jurisdiction.
Search it in UL Product iQ, open the relevant record and match the manufacturer, category and exact model to the hardware being supplied. Then check the standard, rating and stated limitations.
