What is the difference between non fire rated and fire rated door hardware?

There can be confusion in the marketing of door hardware when it comes to products that are "fire rated". When you scan through a suppliers catalog you will often find the notation that the hardware is "fire rated". But non fire rated door Hardware and fire rated door Hardware are two different types of door device.

1.Non fire rated door Hardware

Non fire rated door Hardware is an door device which is tested for use on a door that is required to have door hardware, but cannot be used on a fire door.

2.Fire rated door Hardware

Fire rated door Hardware is an door device which is tested for both Non fire and fire conditions and is required to be used on fire doors where door hardware is required by code or desired for durability. Since fire doors require positive-latching, fire door hardware does not incorporate mechanical dogging.  If a push/pull function is desired for a fire door, electric latch retraction hardware may be installed, as long as the latch projects automatically upon fire alarm.
