How to adjust a door hinge?

1)Method 1 Tighten the hinges in order to close the door

Check the top corners of the door to see if the door is stuck to the frame. As time passes, the hinges on the door may loosen and cause the door to sag. When this happens, the top corner of the door will catch on the frame and cause the door to not close properly. If the top corner of the door catches right on the frame, the hinges will need to be adjusted.

Another way to determine if a door is hanging down is to look at the clearance between the top of the door and the frame. If the gap becomes larger when you move away from the hinges, the door is not hanging correctly.

Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws on the door hinges. Tightening the door hinges will solve the problem by pulling the door back toward the frame (the hinged part of the frame) so it no longer catches on the frame when you try to close it. Tighten the screws on the hinges as much as possible and then try to close the door to see if the problem has been solved.

If the problem persists, loosen the middle screw on the top door hinge. If you are unable to tighten the hinges, you will need to replace the middle screw on the top door hinge.

Screw a 3" (7.6 cm) screw into the top door hinge. Screwing in longer screws will help pull the door toward the frame. Tighten the screws completely until the hinges are securely fastened to the door frame. Then, try to close the door. The door should now close without any problems.

  

2)Method 2 large clearance adjustment of the hinges on the door

Check the clearance between the unhinged side of the door and the frame. If there is a large gap between the door and the frame, the door may not close properly. Instead of installing a new, wider door, you can fix the problem by adjusting the hinges on the door.

If there is a gap only at the top or bottom of the unhinged side of the door, simply adjust the hinges flush with the gap.

Unscrew the bottom door hinge on the door. Use a screwdriver to loosen each screw on the door hinge. If trickier screws are needed, use a power drill.

Walk the hinge halves around 4 times on a piece of cardboard. Place the hinges on a flat surface so that the hinge halves (1 of the hinge plates with the screw holes) can be placed on the cardboard. Draw the outline of the hinge on the cardboard with a pencil. Repeat the above steps on the other three parts of the cardboard. 8]

If only one of the hinges on the door is adjusted, trace the hinge on the cardboard only 2 times.

If your door has more than 2 hinges to be adjusted, you will need to trace 2 other outlines for each hinge.

Cut out the outline of the hinge plate. Use scissors or a box cutter. Try to make the cut as precise as possible. You will have to put the cardboard pieces behind the hinges on the door, if they are too big or too small, they will not fit correctly.

Place the two cardboard cutouts into the mortise and tenon of the door and door frame. The mortise is the indentation in the door and frame where the hinge plate is located. The cardboard cutouts should fit perfectly into the indentations.

Screw the bottom hinge back on top of the cardboard cutout. Push the screw to the right and through the cardboard cutout below the hinge plate. Fully tighten the screw to ensure the hinge is secure. When finished, you should not see the cardboard.

Loosen the top door hinge and add the other 2 cardboard cutouts. Then, screw the top door hinge back into place on the cardboard just as you did with the bottom hinge. Now that both door hinges are slightly lifted by the cardboard, there should be less clearance between the door and the frame.

If your door has more than 2 hinges to adjust, unscrew those hinges and add the other cardboard cut out.

If the gap is still too large, add more cardboard cut-outs. Remove the hinges again and place more cardboard behind them. You may need to use a few pieces of cardboard on each hinge to fix the problem.
