Fire rated hardware is the heart of a fire rated door. The hinge has an extremely important role in the door suspension system to ensure the normal opening and closing of the door. At the same time, hinges also play an important role in life, such as hinges used on fire doors. What happens if the fire door hinges does not use on fire door? Be the hinge necessary for fire protection?
Below we analyze from two points, whether the hinge needs fire protection:
1. The difference between fire rated hinges and non-fire rated hinges
Stainless steel material of the fire door hinge has extremely high strength, corrosion resistance and fire resistance. The hinges of other materials have lower strength, poor corrosion resistance, and are not suitable for fire doors due to their low melting point.
From the perspective of fire resistance, the hardware on the European fire door must be tested for the fire door through the fire door EN1634. It also needs to comply with the formal test requirements of EN/CE and is certified by a third-party certification body. Fireproof hinges must comply with the BS EN1935 standard. The melting point of the material is not less than 800 degrees Celsius.
American fired door hinges must pass the test of UL 10C, and pass the ANSI/BHMA156.1 test of 1,500,000 cycles & 2,500,000 cycles.
Non-fire door hinges cannot be installed for fire doors.
2. Why do you need a fire hinge?
A safety standard metal fire door requires: a door hinge with fire-resistant function and easy disassembly; a lock with a fire-proof function that can quickly open the function; a durable fire-resistant mortise lock that can withstand a fire resistance of more than 2200 lb. The door handles that can function as high temperatures; the door closer that automatically closes the door. These are the essential door hardware that makes up the fire door. If one of them does not have fire resistance, the fire rated door is a failed fire door. Moreover, it is a legal obligation to install fire door hardware on fire door. The new European standard EN 1634:2014 requires frames, door and door hardware must be tested and certified.
Consider the impact on a fire to the door. The door must block the fire to at least 30 minutes, but usually withstand temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees Celsius. The door is warped and charred, and there are often considerable air pressure differences in both sides of the door. Ordinary hinges will quickly deform. The fireproof certified hinge can be tested by a temperature of 1000 ° C for 180 minutes and then over the hose flow test: a 3 minute test in which the door is repeatedly subjected to a test of the impact on the water flow under pressure. D&D's Fire Rated Hinges can still work through the above US UL and CE certification tests.
Ordinary hinges are burnt and deformed under fire, and it is difficult for firefighters to remove the deformed doors by disassembling the hinges. The fire hinges can keep the functions of the doors for a certain period of time, and speed up the firefighters. Rescue speed and ensure the safety of people in the building.
Fire door hinges are manufactured to a high standard and offer outstanding performance in both everyday use and severe fire conditions. They come in a variety of finishes and come with a long warranty for durability. In terms of function, the fireproof hinge can be fireproof for a long time, which guarantees the life safety of the building personnel. This is the need to install a fire door hinge. D&D's fire hinges meet UL and CE testing requirements and have the highest performance for education, healthcare, hospitality, residential and commercial applications. D&D can also provide detailed and professional hardware matching solutions according to different situations.
