UL Fire Rated Commercial Door Hardware Technical Guide
Fire exit hardware and panic hardware look similar: both release a latched door through a crossbar or touchpad. In specifications, however, the terms are not interchangeable. Their certification scope, permitted functions and relationship to the door assembly are different.
The deciding question is whether the opening is fire-rated. Panic hardware is evaluated for safe emergency egress. Fire exit hardware must provide the same release function while allowing a fire door to close and remain positively latched.
Panic hardware is a door-latching assembly designed to release when pressure is applied to an actuating bar across the egress side of the door. It may also be described as an exit device, panic bar, push bar or crash bar. The operating principle is intentionally obvious so that occupants do not need a key, special knowledge or a multi-step action to leave the building.
In North American commercial projects, panic hardware is commonly evaluated to UL 305, the Standard for Panic Hardware. The standard addresses reliable release and performance under the types of forces an exit device may experience in service. A UL 305 listing confirms panic-device performance, but it does not by itself qualify the product for use on a fire-rated door.
D&D Panic Hardware is UL 305 certified under File No. SA45817. It is intended for applicable commercial exit openings where listed panic hardware is required and the door is not required to function as part of a fire-rated assembly.
Typical applications include schools, retail buildings, assembly venues, offices and public buildings. Whether it is mandatory depends on the adopted code, occupancy, occupant load and door location.
Fire exit hardware is an exit device listed for use on a fire-rated door assembly. It provides panic-style release from the egress side, but it must also support the door's fire-protection function. After use, the door must be able to close and latch without manual assistance.
A fire door that closes but does not latch may not remain in the opening under fire conditions. Fire exit hardware must therefore be considered with the door, frame, hinges, closer, strike and seals.
UL guidance distinguishes the categories clearly: panic hardware is listed in accordance with UL 305, while fire exit hardware is evaluated for both panic-release performance and fire door use, including UL 10C positive-pressure fire testing. UL 305 focuses on the function of the releasing device. It evaluates panic hardware as a means of allowing a door to be unlatched through pressure on the crossbar or touchpad. Its central concern is dependable egress operation when people need to move through the opening quickly.
UL 10C covers positive-pressure fire tests of door assemblies. It is relevant to fire doors and to hardware that can affect the assembly's ability to remain closed and resist fire exposure. For fire exit hardware, the egress function and the fire-related performance must both be addressed.
The standards are complementary: UL 305 relates to panic release, while UL 10C relates to performance in a fire-tested door assembly. Similar appearance does not make ordinary panic hardware suitable for a fire door.

Many panic devices offer mechanical dogging, which holds the latch retracted so the opening can operate as a push-pull door during normal business hours. This can be practical at a busy non-fire-rated entrance.
Mechanical dogging is generally not permitted on fire exit hardware because a retracted latch prevents positive latching. Specifically listed electrical latch-retraction arrangements may be used in some projects, provided the latch is restored automatically and the installation remains within the listing.
Review the door schedule, fire and life-safety drawings, specifications and label requirements. Do not decide from the building type alone; one project may contain both fire-rated and non-fire-rated exit doors.
Confirm the adopted building, fire and life-safety codes. Occupancy classification, occupant load, room use and door location can determine whether panic or fire exit hardware is required.
For a fire-rated opening, check the door and frame rating, required duration, door arrangement and compatible hardware. A certified device does not independently certify the complete assembly.
Rim, mortise and vertical-rod devices require different preparations and strikes. The choice must match the door construction, pair arrangement and approved hardware schedule.
Check the certification file, model coverage, permitted door size, installation instructions and fire rating. Also confirm that the closer can bring the door fully closed and that the latch engages without manual assistance.
Common mistakes include installing a UL 305-only device on a fire-rated door, adding mechanical dogging where positive latching is required, or ordering the device without coordinating handing, strikes and door preparation.
These problems are best prevented at the hardware-schedule stage. The device category, door rating, mounting type and certification scope should be coordinated before production rather than corrected on site.
