Keying systems are available in various degrees of complexity depending on the number of keying levels used. Change keys form the lowest level of the hierarchy of a key system. Master, grand master and great grand master keys form the higher levels of hierarchy of key systems.
Level one systems consist of keyed alike and /or keyed different locks and cylinders – no master key. This type system is used in small buildings such as residences or stores. In these types of buildings, most doors, such as entrances, would be keyed alike, while a few closets or storerooms would be keyed different.
Level two systems consist of a master key that operates a group of locks and cylinders, each of which is operated by its own change key. This type system is used in buildings such as schools or apartments, where there are many doors to which master key access is required.
Level three systems add a grand master key that operates one or more master keys. A large office building, for instance, will have offices that have their own change key, a master key that have their own change key, a master key that operates all of the locks and cylinders in an office suite, and a grand master key that operates all of the locks and cylinders in the building.
Level four systems add a great grand master key that operates one or more grand master keys. For example, a large university where each student and teacher has a change key for rooms where they work and live. A master key would open all locks on the floor or corridor. A grand master key would be provided to open an entire building and a great grand master key would fit every door in every building on the university campus.
